Over the past ten years, TEMPLE BETH RISHON has initiated innovative programs to reduce our environmental footprint, to decrease our use of energy, to be more ecologically responsible, and to educate our congregants on the benefits of sustainability.

Progress & Goals for 2017 and Beyond - Thanks to the dedication of our lay leadership and our custodial staff, we have progressed dramatically by:

  • Discontinuing the use of pesticides on our property;

  • Embarking on a program using only organic fertilizer;

  • Embracing Green Cleaning throughout our facility;

  • Practicing recycling throughout our buildings;

  • Incorporating highly efficient lighting and HVAC systems in our new Youth Wing;

  • Constantly working on new ways to reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint;

  • Becoming Energy Star Partners (in process);

  • Fine tuning energy consumption in our new Youth Wing to reduce our electricity usage by more than 25% (year over year since 2015.)

How to Save Energy & Money in your Home

  • Set back your thermostat at night when you sleep, and during the day, if no one is home. Programmable thermostats make this very easy.

  • If you have rooms that are not occupied for long stretches, close the vents and doors to the room to avoid heating the space.

  • Make sure your weather stripping around doors is in good condition.

  • Unplug the extra refrigerator or freezer you have in the garage or basement, until you need it. (Remember to leave the door slightly open when you unplug so air can circulate.) If you are not using it anymore, you can get paid to have it taken away - see the Green Tip below.

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs.

Green Tip - Do you have an extra fridge that you keep around for “overflow”? Not only can you save money on energy bills by turning it off, New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program will pay you $50 for the privilege of taking it away for recycling! There’s a limit of two appliances per household. They must be in working order and between 10 and 30 cubic feet (interior capacity). There is no cost to you for the pickup. Call 877-270-3520 or visit www.njcleanenergy.com.
