Hazzan Cantor Ilan Mamber Biography

Cantor Ilan Mamber was born in Bnei Brak, a suburb of Tel Aviv, Israel. As a child, he was a member and soloist in various choirs in the "great Synagogues" of Tel Aviv and its surrounding towns. Upon his arrival in the United States, he bought himself a guitar, which he taught himself to play. He received a Master's Degree in Social Work from Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler Social Work in 1979.

Cantor Mamber worked in the field of Jewish communal service as a Jewish Center worker from 1977 to 1988. He served at various Jewish Community Centers and YM-YWHA's in the New York metropolitan area. His responsibilities included facility administration, Jewish and general programming, and supervision of program and maintenance personnel.

Cantor Mamber is no stranger to the performing arts. While pursuing a career in the Jewish Cantor field, he also became a successful Israeli-American folk singer performing throughout North America. He has performed on a number of Jewish radio and cable television programs, as well as appearing as a guest at many major Jewish Art Festivals, theaters, university campuses, Jewish community centers, and on behalf of Israel bonds, UJA, JWB Lecture Bureau, Jewish National Fund, Jewish Federations, and other Jewish organizations.

His interest in Jewish music eventually led Ilan back to his roots; Jewish liturgical music. He studied cantorial music with Noach Schall, former director of Yeshiva University’ Cantorial School and well-known composer and arranger. He served as the cantor for the Hillel at Yale University until 1987 when he became the cantor at Temple Beth Rishon. He has been installed into the Cantors’ Assembly and is the secretary of the New Jersey Regional Group of the Cantorial Assembly. This prestigious organization is the professional association for cantors of the Conservative Movement.

Cantor Ilan Mamber lives in Franklin Lakes with his wife Carol, and their children, Noah and Aliza.
