READER'S CIRCLE - Monthly Jewish Themed Book Club

Our February 2 meeting was graced by 21 eager participants who heard Evelyn Meir present a review of Philip Roth's book, Nemesis. We welcomed four new participants to our growing roster of reader's club members.

As we continue through the year, we are looking forward to additional book reviews that will maintain the high level of participation in this unique club that boasts a membership that ranges in in ages from the thirties to the eighties. What a great intergenerational model!!

On March 1, Yvonne Cohen will review Alicia, by Alicia Appelman-Jurman. This autobiographical story has received wonderful reviews from the critics.

The story begins before the Holocaust began,  when Alicia Jurman was a young Jewish girl growing up in the southeastern Polish city of  Buczacz.  Even though there was anti-Semitism in Poland, as there was anti-Semitism nearly everywhere in Europe, Alicia with her parents and four brothers led relatively peaceful lives. This all changed with Germany's invasion of Poland.  Only the strong and resourceful would be alive at the end of the war. For a Jew to survive this slaughter - it was very difficult - nearly impossible.  However, there are those who not only survived, but who also rose up and saved lives and even fought back. For a child, a young girl, to survive and save lives and fight back - it is truly awe-inspiring. Alicia is that person and she is among female heroes of the Holocaust. This is her story.

We will not be meeting in April because the Passover Holiday has created a calendar that is not conducive to convening a book club session.

However, our May meeting will be held on Thursday, May 3 and we will be reviewing a contemporary piece, To the End of the Land, by David Grossman. Our reviewer will be Sue Ann Levin.

The Reader's Circle Book Club is beginning a new year with a solid core of committed participants who have enthusiasm for sharing wonderful books. We are pleased that in the past four years, we have grown from a handful of people to a formidable membership.

We hope you will find the time to read with us -- you will be glad you did!

We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30PM in Room 8 of the Andrew Friedland Preschool.
